16:9 vs 4:3: Understanding Common Aspect Ratios

Where these two ratios came from, what each is still good for, and how to move between them without ruining the composition.

16:9 and 4:3 are the two shapes most people encounter daily, and the choice between them is not just aesthetic. It changes what fits in the frame and how the image behaves on different devices.

Where they came from

4:3 was the standard for early film and for television for most of the twentieth century, and it survives in many camera sensors, tablets and document scans. 16:9 was chosen as a compromise widescreen format when television moved to digital broadcasting, and it became the default for monitors, phones in landscape and video platforms.

What each is good at

16:9 suits landscapes, video, presentation slides and anything shown full screen on a modern display. Its width gives room for horizontal composition and side-by-side elements.

4:3 is taller, which suits portraits, product shots, documents and print layouts. It also wastes less space on tablets held vertically, and it holds more of a subject's height in the frame at the same width.

Converting between them

Going from 4:3 to 16:9 means removing height. A 4000 by 3000 photo becomes 4000 by 2250, cutting 750 pixels from the top and bottom combined. Decide deliberately where that comes from rather than centre-cropping by default, because a centred crop often slices off heads or feet.

Going the other way means removing width, from 4000 by 2250 down to 3000 by 2250 in the same example. Anything important near the left or right edge will be lost.

Practical advice

Shoot in the widest sensor ratio available and crop afterwards. Cropping discards pixels but keeps quality; adding canvas or stretching does not. When one image must appear in several ratios, plan the composition around the tightest crop you will need.
