Why crop instead of resize?
Resizing changes the scale of the whole picture; cropping changes what the picture contains. When a layout demands a square thumbnail from a wide photograph, resizing would squash the subject, while cropping keeps proportions correct and simply shows less of the scene. In practice the two operations are complementary: crop to the right shape first, then use the resizer to reach the exact pixel dimensions.
Composition tips
- Leave breathing room around a subject that will sit behind overlaid text.
- Keep faces away from the extreme edges — social platforms often apply their own additional crop.
- For product photography, crop tightly and consistently so a grid of items looks uniform.
- Straighten a tilted horizon with a 90° rotation only when the image is sideways; small angle corrections are better done in a photo editor.

Technical information
The crop is applied to the full-resolution image, not to the smaller preview, so a selection covering half of a 4000 pixel wide photo yields a 2000 pixel wide file. Everything happens in your browser through the Canvas API — the image is never transmitted. If you only need to turn or mirror an image, the dedicated rotate and flip tools are quicker.

How do I select the crop area?
Drag across the preview to draw a selection rectangle. Choosing a ratio preset first constrains the shape while you drag.
Does cropping lose quality?
No pixels inside the selection are altered — cropping simply discards everything outside it. JPG output is re-encoded once, which is why we export at a high quality setting.
Can I rotate and crop in one pass?
Yes. Rotation and flipping are applied to the working image before the crop, so the selection you draw always matches what you download.
What format is the cropped file?
JPEG inputs are exported as JPG; everything else is exported as PNG so transparency survives.
Why is my crop slightly different from what I drew?
The selection is stored as a proportion of the image and converted to whole pixels on export, so the result can differ by a pixel at most.
