What EXIF contains

The specification covers hundreds of fields. In practice the useful ones are camera make and model, lens, focal length, exposure time, aperture, ISO, the capture timestamp and the orientation flag. Editing software adds its own entries, and some cameras and phones embed GPS coordinates.

The privacy angle

A photo taken at home and posted online can carry the exact coordinates of that home. Most large social platforms strip metadata on upload, but files shared by email, chat or direct download usually keep everything. Check before sharing images of private locations.

How to remove metadata

Any tool that decodes an image and re-encodes it from the pixel data produces a clean file, because the metadata block is simply not written. Running a photo through the compress, resize or convert tools here has that effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which formats carry EXIF?

Mainly JPEG and TIFF, plus camera raw files. PNG has no standard EXIF block, and WebP support is inconsistent.

Why does my file show no metadata?

It was probably re-saved by an editor or a platform that strips it, or it was exported from a screenshot or a design tool.

Can I see GPS coordinates?

If the camera recorded them and they were not stripped, location fields appear in the list.

Is my photo uploaded to read the data?

No. The file is parsed in your browser and never transmitted.
