Why WebP wins on photographs
JPEG dates from 1992 and uses a discrete cosine transform on 8 × 8 pixel blocks. WebP borrows techniques from modern video compression: it predicts each block from its already-decoded neighbours and stores only the difference. Because most photographs contain large areas that are broadly similar to what surrounds them, that prediction removes a great deal of redundancy before any quality loss is applied.

Serving WebP safely
If you control the HTML, the safest pattern is a <picture> element listing the WebP source first and a JPG fallback second, so older clients still receive an image. Most content management systems and CDNs can also negotiate the format automatically based on the browser's Accept header.

How much smaller is WebP than JPG?
At comparable visual quality, WebP files are usually 25–35% smaller. The gap is widest on images with smooth gradients and soft backgrounds.
Do all browsers support WebP?
Every current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge displays WebP. Very old software and some desktop applications still do not, which is why a JPG fallback is occasionally worth keeping.
Am I compressing the image twice?
Yes, technically. The JPEG is decoded and re-encoded as WebP, so quality below about 80 can start to compound existing artifacts. Convert from the highest quality source you have.
Will EXIF data be preserved?
No. The conversion writes fresh pixel data, so camera metadata is dropped. View it beforehand with the metadata viewer if you need to keep a record.
